Everyone in the office had been stung by Mac's sarcasm. Each morning, Mac's harsh words put people on the defensive. When Mac showed up, morale went down—until a new hire refused to buy in to Mac's moods. Mac snarled—but the new hire replied gently, courteously—even kindly. And not just once. Every time.

Eventually, love won. Mac quit snarling so much.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. The proverb says, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Most arguments flare up not because of words, but tone of voice. Choose your words and tone carefully. Let love win today . . . in the high calling of our daily work.

Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. (James 3:5)
