A graphic pictorial image has stayed with me as a powerful lesson. It was a news magazine photograph of prisoners—the worst of the worst—in individual cells.

In their isolation, these hardened criminals had no visual contact with each other. Yet in this photo, their arms were extended from their cells, out into the hallway, holding hand mirrors trying to see the faces of other inmates.

It said to me that we all need contact with other people. We're all meant to live in community. We need each other. We cry out for companionship.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Some people believe they can do it alone, but that is just not true. It won't work. Relationships are vital—in the high calling of our daily work.

"The LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high, from heaven he viewed the earth, to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned to death."

(Ps. 102:19-20)
