It’s the time for resolutions. Why do we vow to change every January 1st—yet by February laugh at our high intentions? One reason is that profound change is so difficult. Another reason is that we can’t do it alone. A man named Bill W. has taught millions of people to pray, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.”
This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. The Serenity Prayer is a daily plea for Alcoholics Anonymous—people who help each other and know—they can only conquer addiction one step—one day—at a time. Their wisdom regarding real change applies to us all—in the high calling of our daily work.
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.
