Respect Lessons of the Past

Audio / Produced by The High Calling

Transcript

Pulitzer prizewinning historian David McCullough loves history and loves quotations about history. He peppers his speeches with sayings such as: “Why is it that no one listens when history repeats itself?” and “Past things shed light on future ones.” And “The only new thing in the world is the history you don't know.”

Mr. McCullough also says that trying to plan for the future without knowing the past is like trying to plant cut flowers.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Don’t ever think that life's great epic begins and ends with our own stories or our own times. History gives us roots that can help our future continue to bloom. Respect the lessons of the past—in the high calling of our daily work.

If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load.

(Gal. 6:3-5)
