Sun and Shadow

Audio / Produced by The High Calling

Transcript

Lilli Palmer grew up in Germany with a mother who did not fear other people's opinions. When Lilli came home crying that another child did not like her, Lilli’s mother would say, "Everybody’s friend is everybody’s fool." Or "Where there is much sun, there is much shadow."

As an adult, Lilli said, "I don’t set out to antagonize people or to be aggressive or provocative, but I have never made a special concession just to be liked."

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Of course, we strive to live peaceably with the people around us. We do not seek adversaries. But if, in good conscience, your decisions draw criticism or disapproval, remember these words: a strong sun also casts strong shadows—in the high calling of our daily work.

Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

(Gal. 1:10)
