Trammell Crow and Love

In the early 1970s, real estate developer Trammell Crow was asked to speak at the Harvard Business School. Afterward, a student asked Mr. Crow to identify the most important single element in creating a successful business. Mr. Crow paused and answered: "Love."

Trammel Crow's biographer explains: "Crow firmly believes that if you love people, you will be more successful with them. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful at your job. If you love yourself, you will be a better person."*

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. C. S. Lewis says love is far more sturdy and splendid than mere sentiment. Trammel Crow credits it for his world-changing achievements. We can hardly do better than pursue real love . . . in the high calling of our daily work.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
