You Define Success for Yourself

Audio / Produced by The High Calling

Transcript

In Spencer Johnson's small book The Present, an old man tells a teenage boy that wealth cannot be measured in gold or money alone.

The young man is confused. He asks, "Then what does it mean to be successful?" The old man tells the boy: "Success is whatever gets you closer to what you think is important. "

"So I have to define success for myself?" the boy asks. The old man nods, "We all have to."

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. The conversation goes on, but I want us to pause at the old man's definition of success. Success is what gets you closer to what you believe is important. That definition, individual to every person, also defines the high calling of our daily work.

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? (Luke 9:24-25)
